Der Krieg der Karten. Geografen und Grenzziehungen in Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa 1914–1920

The author analyses professional geographical narratives centered upon the borders in East Central and Southeast Europe in the context of the First World War. It is argued that they represent a regional equivalent of nationalistic mobilization of intellectuals’ characteristic for Western Europe and broadly referred to as ‘spiritual war’ (Krieg der Geister). Typically, they tended to employ the newest methodological trends (notably anthropogeography) together with inspirations from the tradition of national characterology (or ethnopsychology). They also participated in the international discussions on the question of ‘natural’ borders. The main fronts of ‘the war of maps’ spread mostly around territorial claims in the region: the German expansion to the East, the confl ict between Bulgaria and Serbia in Macedonia, the Polish-Ukrainian border confl ict, hostilities between Italy and Serbia etc. The expertise of the East Central and Southeast European geographers was, then, instrumental for the reshaping of the region following the decisions of the Peace Conference. Finally, professional techniques and modes of argumentation used by the region’s geographers inspired interwar revisionist campaigns in Hungary and Germany.

Kathleen Geaney
Špatná strana hranice? Anglicky mluvící levicová komunita v Československu na počátku studené války

The paper deals with the English-speaking community in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. It attempts to illustrate that although international communism was supposed to cross national boundaries, it was not always the case in reality. There were invisible boundaries – mental, language, cultural, ethnic and racial – that proved to be diffi cult to overcome for both the guests and their hosts. The paper concentrates on questions such as the role of Czechoslovakia and Prague in the international communist movement, anti-Western propaganda, political asylum, housing and job related issues the English-speakers had to face, family questions, language issues and free time activities.

Funkcionální proměna hranice a historický diskurz v současnosti: česko-saský příklad po roce 1989

In the past couple of decades the social sciences have paid much attention to the topic of boundaries and boundary regions. The present article analyses the changes in the discursive assessment of the Czech-Saxon boundary after 1989. It focuses on the transformation of the national and transnational culture and politics of history related to boundaries, cross-border regions and cross-border interactions. The interplay of the socio-political transition with its discursive implications and the application of new methods and concepts in social sciences (boundary and identity studies, spatial turn etc.) created conditions for a significant modification of the approach to boundaries and boundary regions. Concentrating on the public and academic discourse, the article assesses the conceptualization and representation of the Czech-Saxon boundary in political and public rhetoric, historiography and museology.

Cestování a cestovní ruch v Československu mezi lety 1945–1989 pohledem české historiografie soudobých dějin

The article reviews the research on travelling and tourism in Czechoslovakia from 1945 till the end of the communist regime in 1989. The attention is paid to three elementary dimensions. The first part points out some of the limits of existing research which during the last seventy years was formed through the specific discipline of Czech tourism research. Second part is tackling some of the current problems and challenges in the research, particularly the questions connected with relevant sources. The third part outlines some basic topics, along which the future research on travelling and tourism can be structured.
