Die vorliegende Ausgabe der Zeitschrift widmet sich der Kultur- und Ideengeschichte Zentraleuropas im 20. Jahrhundert. Sie verknüpft Studien, die sich verschiedenen Bruchpunkten des Jahrhunderts und der Rolle ausgewählten Akteuren oder Gruppierungen widmen. Bezüglich des Jahres 1918 behandeln die Texte die formativen Persönlichkeiten der christlichen Politik Tschechoslowakeis nach dem Jahr 1918 und die diskursive Benutzung des Bolschewismus Begriffs für die Befestigung des neu gegründeten tschechoslowakischen Staates. Die dritte Studie rekapituliert die Ideengeschichte zentraleuropäischer Intellektueller, deren in den 50er und 60er Jahren ausformierte Anschauungen in den 80er und frühen 90er Jahren mit dem Fall vom Kommunismus und nachhergehender postkommunistischen Transformation Zentraleuropas weitgehend in Frage gestellt wurden. Der letzte Beitrag analysiert dann die Entstehung und Formierung der unabhängigen slowakischen Auswärtspolitik, die sich schon unmittelbar nach der Wende zu profilieren begann und die nach der Gründung eines souveränen slowakischen Staates dynamisch umgesetzt wurde.
Der Diskussionsbeitrag skizziert die Position der zentraleuropäischen Region in den herrschenden Narrativen der russischen Schulbücher und damit auch das Geschichtsbild, dass die Wahrnehmung der breiten russischen Öffentlichkeit gegenüber der Region wesentlich mitprägt.

Jaroslav ŠebekJan Šrámek and Bohumil Stašek. Two Examples of Harmony and Dissonance within the Czech and Moravian Catholic Politics after 1918.
The study deals with the comparison of individualities of Jan Šrámek and Bohumil Stašek – key fi gures of Christian Politics in Czech Lands in the interwar period. Their opinions and positions had big influence on the Czechoslovak People’s Party and its politics. The conflict between Stašek and Šrámek, particularly virulent during the 1930s, was a long-term affair and its front-line lead between the Bohemian and the Moravian leaderships in the Czechoslovak People’s Party.
Vít StrobachBody, Jewishness, Bolshevism and Czech Nationalism (1918–1920)
The study focuses on the Czech nationalism in the first years of interwar Czechoslovakia and explores in detail the particular figure of Judeo-Bolshevism, as it was used in the Czech national discourse. Use of the term of the Jewish “race”, which was supposed to strive for power, was to help in uniting the national society and discard everything, which did not fit within the framework of uniformly represented “national interest”. Stigmatizing bolshevism (communism) by its presumed “Jewishness” was used as an intelligible component of the identity language and helped to preserve the Czech „national unity“ as a main pillar of the newly founded state. The revolutionary project of the radical left therefore could have been positioned outside of this framework and thereby displaced out of the unified national collective.

The article focuses on the debates among the East European intellectuals in the 1980´s and 90´s. Their discussions about Central Europe from the middle and second half of the 1980´s is summed up and the shock caused by meeting the phenomena of flourishing nationalism and national--chauvinism in political processes following the fall of the Soviet Union is analyzed.

The study deals with the historical determinants, concepts and practical implementation of the foreign policy of the Slovak Republic in the first decade of its existence (from its establishment in 1993 to Slovakia’s accession to the NATO and EU in 2004). Author examines the external and internal factors shaping the Slovak foreign policy, i.e. in particular the dynamics, which on the one hand resulted from the attractiveness of NATO and the EU (and of the Western orientation in general) but on the other hand was based on the anti-liberal and nationalist political traditions and tendencies that were very significant in Slovakia in the respective period.
