The International Newsletter of Communist Studies Dr. Bernhard H. Bayerlein Institut für Soziale Bewegungen, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Clemensstrasse 17–19, 44789 Bochum
Von
Albert, Gleb J.

Dear authors and readers of the International Newsletter of Communist Studies, dear friends and colleagues,

After a long delay, we can finally present you the International Newsletter of Communist Studies Online XIX (2013), no. 26. We are sorry that it took us so long to release it. The delay was due to urgent research commitments and new institutional alignments of both editors – while Gleb Albert just completed his PhD dissertation on early Soviet internationalism at Bielefeld University, Bernhard H. Bayerlein assumed a new position at the Institute of Social Movements at the Ruhr University Bochum, coordinating an international research project on Willi Münzenberg, “Die Zukunft” and the “Union Franco-Allemande” (see the presentation in the current issue).

The new issue can be downloaded at <http://newsletter.icsap.de/home/data/pdf/INCS_26_ONLINE.pdf>. Thanks to our authors and contributors, once again the International Newsletter with more than 300 pages is able to offer a wide range of news, information, studies and materials on the history of communism. You can find the table of contents at the bottom of this mail. Furthermore, the new issue features the International Bibliography of Communist Studies, issue 2012, covering over 500 books and over 1000 journal articles. This was possible thanks to our correspondents sustaining this huge undertaking, as well as our intern, Véronique Mickisch, who did a tremendous work researching titles for the bibliography. However, new correspondents are very welcome to contribute publication titles from countries that are not yet well-covered, as well as new information items and materials. Since the International Newsletter is something that both editors have to maintain in their spare time, contributions from and contacts with correspondents, authors and readers are absolutely crucial.

An increasing number of readers during the past few years have suggested that the International Newsletter should move away from its present publication form as a one-file PDF document towards something that corresponds with modern technical standards of open access online journal publishing. We are glad to announce that in the next months we will be working on implementing a new online publishing system that would allow readers to access and link to the Newsletter’s single contributions. Hopefully, the new system will be ready to use for the forthcoming 2014 issue.

While the issue we are proud to present to you today is the 2013 Online issue, there will be, of course, a 2014 issue that will come out in autumn. The print edition was already published a few months ago as a supplement for the new volume of the Jahrbuch für Historische Kommunismusforschung, which can be obtained at <https://www.bundesstiftung-aufarbeitung.de/jhk-2014-4549.html>. While we already have a number of promising contributions for this year’s forthcoming online issue, we highly welcome new project presentations and concise article publications to include. The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2014. Please get in touch with us well before the date if you plan an article contribution. Furthermore, the same deadline applies for information contributions for the INCS print edition for 2015, where we welcome short project presentations (up to one page) as well as information on archives, upcoming conferences, new research and online projects, expositions, movies and cultural events and so on.

For 2015, we plan to organise an event to assemble the International Newsletter’s editorial board, correspondents and authors and to facilitate exchange between them in order to discuss their ongoing research as well as new ways of how the Newsletter can continue to stay at the forefront of Communist Studies for the years to come. The time and date for this meeting is still under discussion, and so is the question of funding. For the latter, we welcome any ideas about possible institutional support.

Kind regards and good luck with your ongoing research,

Bernhard H. Bayerlein, Executive Editor
Gleb J. Albert, Junior Editor
