Der politische Bruch, den der Erste Weltkrieg und die Umwälzungen des Jahres 1918 in Europa bewirkten, spiegelt sich in einer durchaus opulenten Forschungslandschaft wider: Allein zur Habsburgermonarchie bzw. zu deren Nachfolgestaaten liegt eine Fülle an diplomatie-, partei- und ideologiegeschichtliche Darstellungen vor. Im Verhältnis dazu blieben wirtschafts- und sozialhistorische Themen bislang unterrepräsentiert. Die Schwerpunktsetzung der Konferenz trägt diesem Ungleichgewicht Rechnung, wobei die Inhalte räumlich auf den Donau-Adria-Raum fokussieren, genau genommen auf Italien und die Nachfolgestaaten der Donaumonarchie. Wesentliche Fragestellungen betreffen die wirtschaftlichen Interessen Italiens in den Nachfolgestaaten, ökonomische und strukturelle Entwicklungen in den Nachfolgestaaten selbst und – nicht zuletzt – entsprechende Vergleiche und Wechselwirkungen zwischen den besagten Staaten (wobei dies durchaus auch regionalgeschichtlich angelegt sein kann). Längsschnitte sollen jeweils vordergründig die Zwischenkriegszeit behandeln, müssen, so es darüber hinaus Kontinuitäten und Vergleichsmöglichkeiten gibt, jedoch nicht auf diese beschränkt bleiben. Konkret sind Einreichungen zu folgenden Themenstellungen erwünscht:
- Wirtschaft: Handel und Industrie
- Wirtschaftswachstum und Krisen, Sektoren und Standorte, Unternehmen, Produkte und Warenströme, technische Entwicklungen
- Währung und Staatsfinanzen
- Inflation, Währungsreformen, Budget und Staatsverschuldung, Banken
- Infrastruktur und Strukturpolitik
- Öffentliche Investitionen, Schienennetz und Straße, Wohnbau, Stadtentwicklung, Fremdenverkehr, technische Entwicklungen
- Demografie und Sozialstruktur
- Bevölkerungsentwicklung und -struktur, Demografische Transition, Pauperisierung und Rechtspopulismus
- Kultur- und Kulturpolitik
- Kulturelle Neuausrichtung nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, internationale Kulturkontakte auf staatlicher und nichtstaatlicher Ebene
Die internationale Konferenz richtet sich insbesondere auch an den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs (Promovierende, Post-Docs).

Einreichsprachen: Englisch, Deutsch, Italienisch.
Die Veranstaltung wird ebenfalls dreisprachig abgehalten (Simultanübersetzung). Für jeden Vortrag sind 25 Minuten anberaumt. Vorbehaltlich verfügbarer Mittel können Reise- und Übernachtungskosten übernommen werden.

The political disruption, caused by World War I and by the upheavals which took place in Europe in 1918, is well echoed throughout a very rich research landscape. In fact, there are plenty of historical presentations dedicated to the Habsburg monarchy and to its successor states with reference to the history of diplomacy, of the political parties and of ideologies. As a result, some topics pertaining to the economic and social history have been long underrepresented. In addressing these issues, the conference aims at taking into account this thematic imbalance, whereby – from a geographical point of view –- the focus will be on the Danube-Adriatic Region and, more precisely, on Italy and on the successor states of the Danube monarchy. The main issues include Italy’s economic interests concerning the successor states, their economic and structural developments and – last but not least – relevant comparisons and interactions between all said states (these topics can also be addressed by referring to regional historical developments). The conference tracks will be covering the interwar period. However, they are not necessarily limited to this era, as long as it is possible to detect some continuity and to make some comparisons. More specifically, papers addressing the following topics will be accepted:
- Economy: Trade and Industry
- Economic growth and crisis, economy sectors und business hubs, enterprises, products and flows of goods, technical development
- Currency and Public Finance
- Inflation, currency reform, budget and public debt, banks
- Infrastructures and Structural Policies
- Public investments, rail network and roads, housing, urban development , tourism, technical development
- Demography and Social Structure
- Demographic development and structure, demographic transition, pauperization and right-wing populism
- Culture and Cultural policy
- Cultural reorientation after World War I, international cultural contacts at governmental and non-governmental level
Especially young researchers are kindly invited to attend (doctoral students, post-docs).
Documents to be submitted: draft paper (max. 500 words) and a brief resume.
Papers can be submitted in the following languages: English, German and Italian.
Likewise, the conference will be held in three languages (simultaneous interpretation will be provided). Each presentation will be allotted a maximum of 25 minutes. Subject to available funding, travelling and accommodation expenses will be covered by the organizers.

La rivoluzione politica, messa in atto dalla prima Guerra mondiale e dai capovolgimenti del 1918 in Europa, trova un suo riflesso nel panorama estremamente ricco della ricerca. Basti pensare che solo in merito alla monarchia asburgica o ai suoi Stati successori si contano ad oggi tutta una serie di rappresentazioni nell’ambito della storia diplomatica, partitica e ideologica. I temi storici che analizzano questo periodo dal punto di vista economico e sociale, invece, sono stati a lungo sottorappresentati. Questa conferenza, nella scelta dei temi, intende appunto compensare tale sbilanciamento, laddove i contenuti si incentreranno principalmente, dal punto di vista geografico, sull’area adriatico-danubiana, ovvero sull’Italia e sugli Stati successori della monarchia asburgica. Gli aspetti principali riguarderanno gli interessi economici nutriti dall’Italia nei confronti degli Stati successori, gli sviluppi economici e strutturali in questi stessi Stati e – non da ultimo – i confronti e le interazioni tra loro (sebbene questo tema potrà essere analizzato anche a livello di storia regionale). Le sezioni traversali riguarderanno principalmente il periodo tra le due guerre, ma - laddove sia possibile individuare una continuità e margini di confronti - esse potranno anche non essere circoscritte solo a tale epoca. Concretamente i temi su cui verteranno le presentazioni sono i seguenti:
- Economia: commercio e industria
- Crescita economica e crisi, settori e poli economici di eccellenza, aziende, prodotti e flussi di merci, sviluppi tecnici.
- Valuta e finanze pubbliche
- Inflazione, riforme valutarie, budget e debito pubblico, banche.
- Infrastruttura e politica strutturale
- Investimenti pubblici, rete ferroviaria e strade, edilizia, sviluppo urbano, turismo, sviluppi tecnici.
- Demografia e struttura sociale
- Sviluppo e struttura demografica, transizione demografica, depauperamento e populismo di destra.
- Cultura e politica culturale
- Nuovo orientamento culturale dopo la prima Guerra mondiale, contatti culturali internazionali a livello governativo e non governativo.
La conferenza internazionale è rivolta soprattutto ai ricercatori post-laurea (dottorandi, post-doc).
Documentazione da presentare: bozza dell’intervento (non più di 500 parole) e curriculum breve.
Lingue in cui è possibile redigere la presentazione: inglese, tedesco, italiano.
La conferenza sarà ugualmente in tre lingue (è prevista l’interpretazione simultanea). Per ogni intervento sono concessi 25 minuti. Compatibilmente con la disponibilità dei fondi potranno essere coperte le spese di viaggio e di pernottamento.
