TEÓRIA A METODOLÓGIA / METHODOLOGY

ŠÚSTOVÁ DRELOVÁ Agáta
Čo znamená národ pre katolíkov na Slovensku?
(What does the “nation” mean to Catholics in Slovakia? (Approaches and methodologies after the cultural turn and post-confessional critique))
S. 385-411.

What does the “nation“ mean to Catholics in Slovakia? How has its meaning changed over time? These and similar questions are time and again becoming relevant against the backdrop of the current resurgence of nationalist moods and politics. However, social researchers in Slovakia, historians of religion included, have yet to answer these questions satisfactorily. Meaning-making among Catholics in post-war Slovakia has been and remains an uncharted territory. The reasons are both ideological and methodological. Focusing on the methodological part of the issue, this paper proposes an approach to the study of religion which combines theoretical and methodological innovations brought about by the Cultural Turn and the ensuing post-confessional critique of modern and post-modern approaches in the study of religion.

JÁGER Róbert – LYSÝ Miroslav
K jazyku miestnej správy podľa staroslovienskeho prekladu Nomokánona
(On the language of local administration according to the Old Slavonic translation of the Nomokanon)
S. 413-437.

In the paper we try to reconstruct the system of local administration in Mojmír’s Moravia. We start from the assumption that the terms used in the Old Slavonic translation of the Nomokanon to designate units in the ecclesiastical administration probably reflected the terms used in local administration in the language of the time. Attention is devoted to units designated as oblastь, strojenije, predělъ, gradъ, město, vьsь, strana. Then we try to identify these territorial units in the system of local administration, their place in the supposed hierarchical structure with a hypothetical description of their organization.

Valentín Mančkovič – uhorský tlačiar v 16. storočí
(Valentín Mančkovič – a printer in 16th century Hungary)
S. 439-465.

The study is directed towards the activity of a wandering Protestant printer Valentín Mančovič in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 16th century. It summarizes his printing activity at Šintava, Plavecký Hrad, Hlohovec and Vižoľ. It comprehensively captures the life and work of Valentín Manč-kovič and on the basis of surviving archive sources corrects the hitherto inaccurate chronology of his printing of books. The language and content of his independent works and those produced in cooperation with Peter Bornemisza are also considered. The paper analyses the social circumstances of a moving printing press and gives information about Valentín Mančkovič’s translation activities.

Začiatky moderného mestského plánovania v Uhorsku. Prípad Bratislavy a Nového Sadu
(The beginnings of modern urban planning in the Kingdom of Hungary using the examples of Bratislava and Novi Sad)
S. 467-480.

The principles of modern urban planning began to be applied in the Kingdom of Hungary in the second half of the 19th century. In most cases, the first regulation plans appeared around 1900, when these cities were experiencing dynamic growth. The ideas generated in the first plans for regulation and long-term development pre-determined the development of these cities and has determined their form until today. The study considers the principles and approaches applied in modern planning at the turn of the century. Using the example of two cities – Bratislava and Nový Sad – it analyses the key terms applied in expert discussion at the time, their use in territorial planning practice and the contribution of the notable Hungarian city planning expert Antal Palóczi to this discussion.

Československá pozemková reforma na statcích cizinců na Slovensku. Případ baronského rodu von Steiger-Münsingen
(Czechoslovak land reform and the estates of foreigners in Slovakia. The case of the baronial von Steiger-Münsingen family)
S. 481-500.

The authors were concerned with land reform on the large Hajná Nová Ves estate, which belonged to Maria von Steiger-Münsingen, later Savioli, who had Swiss and later Italian citizenship. The aim was both to identify the main parameters of the land reform on the Hajná Nová Ves estate and compare it with the situation elsewhere, while also finding out how far the implementation of land reform was affected if a landowner could rely on support from the government of a neutral state or later the originally allied Italy. The main aim was to confirm or refute the hypothesis that thanks to foreign protection, von Steiger and her heirs were better treated during the land reform. The authors show that this did not happen, especially because of the owner’s lack of negotiating skills.

„So Židom som nevyjednával.“ K arizáciám spisovateľa Ľudovíta Mistríka-Ondrejova
(“I never negotiated with Jew.” On the Aryanizations of the writer Ľudovít Mistrík-Ondrejov)
S. 501-519.

The study is devoted to the participation of the notable Slovak writer Ľudovít Mistrík-Ondrejov in the Aryanization of Jewish property in Slovakia in the period 1939 – 1945. The fact that Ľudovít Mistrík-Ondrejov profited from the Aryanization of Jewish firms is relatively well-known and was already publicized in connection with the bookshop owning Steiner family, whose business Mistrík-Ondrejov Aryanized. The present study is a comprehensive study of the Aryanizing activities of Ľ. Mistrík-Ondrejov, covering not only the Aryanization of the Steiner bookshop, but also of the Känzler Brothers firm in Bratislava from which Ľ. Mistrík-Ondrejov personally profited. The study provides hitherto unknown fact about both Ľ. Mistrík-Ondrejov’s Aryanizations.

Úloha Nemecka v drevárskom priemysle Slovenska 1939 – 1945. Kapitálové vzťahy
(The role of Germany in the Slovak timber industry, 1939–1945. Capital relationships)
S. 521-539.

The forestry and timber industry had strategic importance in Slovak – German economic relations in the period 1939–1945. After 1938 German capital undertook considerable capital expansion into the Slovak forestry and timber industry. The main instrument of expansion was the German – Slovak corporation United Timber and Industrial Company, which built a factory for wooden buildings at Turany and a network of operations for extracting timber. However, activities in Slovakia were also developed by other German firms. They built up small and middle-sized timber operations in various regions.

IVANIČ Peter
(Tolls in the Middle Ages in the Hron and Žitava regions)
S. 541-554.

Research on road tolls is one of the marginal themes in Slovak historiography. Toll payments included dry tolls payable on roads and bridge or wet tolls payable on bridges, ferries and rivers. Payments were originally part of the royal prerogative. The paper is devoted to the problem of road tolls using the example of two neighbouring regions around the rivers Hron and Žitava, through which some important roads went in the Middle Ages. The author has succeeded in identifying a dense network of toll points on the basis of the written sources. The majority of them are recorded in written sources only from the 14th and 15th centuries. Perhaps we can suppose that some of them already existed in earlier periods. The size of toll payments is only occasionally mentioned. There were long-lasting disputes about the ownership of some important toll points, for example, Starý Tekov.
