At the Center for Research on Contemporary History (Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung) in Potsdam (Germany), the workshop "’Europe’ in the Eastern block. Imaginations and streams of social communication" will be held from the 3rd to the 5th of November.

The objects of research and consideration will be analyzes, debates, ideas and visualizations on "Europe" and "European integration", produced in the countries of the former Eastern block. Of interest are related official discourses (for example, of the Communist party) but half-official (of a tolerated opposition) and anti-official (of the dissent) as well. We are focusing on a cultural evaluation of the reference "Europe" and the uses of it in socialist European countries. The sociological and political history of the relationships between different socialist countries will be of secondary importance.

We are very anxious to receive contribution offers on the Baltic countries, Southeastern Europe and the Soviet Union as well as its successor states. Nevertheless, research on other regions, on theoretical aspects or comparative approaches is welcome, too. We have designed the meeting as a platform of discussion and exchange, with three panels and an additional reading-workshop, where key texts will be analyzed and discussed.

Contribution proposals:

The deadline for abstracts (approx. 1000 words, in English or German) is set on May, 29th 2005. The organizers do cover accommodation and travel costs for the panelists. Papers should be sent to the organization by September, the 30th. The presentations shall in no case be longer than 20 minutes. Official languages of the workshop will be German and English (without translation). The publication of the papers in an anthology is planned. Researchers, who do not want to present a paper, are free to participate without previous registration.
