The Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung (ZZF) in Potsdam, Germany, is pleased to invite applications for three Summer Fellowships in 2006 to study German and European History after 1945. These two-month fellowships provide an opportunity to pursue individual research projects in the Berlin/Brandenburg area and participate in the intellectual life of one of Germany’s major research centers on Contemporary History. Founded in 1996, the ZZF has broadened its focus from the GDR to the Federal Republic, East-West German relations, and the Cold War in Europe. Its Library holds approx. 60,000 items and subscribes to more than 100 periodicals.

Applicants must be postdoctoral researchers or senior scholars and have an outstanding academic record. They are expected to pursue their own research, but preference will be given to those applicants whose interests relate to one of the four thematic clusters at the ZZF:
(1) Berlin and Brandenburg as Shop Windows: East-West Confrontation and Détente on the Local Level;
(2) Socialism as Social Question: A Comparative Study of Social Policy in East Central Europe;
(3) The Cold War as Culture Clash: Media and Mass Movements in Western and Eastern Europe;
(4) The Cultural Legitimacy of Dictatorship and Democracy: Contrasting the Third Reich, the GDR and the FRG.
Further information on these research groups and their about four dozen individual projects can be found at www.zzf-pdm.de. The summer fellows will be assigned to one of these research groups and asked to present their current project in a seminar or colloquium.

Stipends vary between EUR 6,000 (junior level) and EUR 8,000 (senior level) for a grant period of two months. This non-renewable funding is supposed to cover all expenses including travel, housing, and insurance. Fellows are expected to reside in Berlin or Potsdam. The ZZF will provide office space, access to the Internet and other relevant facilities.

The application deadline is April 15, 2006. Decisions will be announced not later than May 1, 2006. All applications must include

1. A letter of interest;
2. A curriculum vitae (including a list of publications);
3. A project proposal not exceeding five pages (1,500 words);
4. Two letters of recommendation.
