Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (m, w, d) im Bereich Qualitative Sozialforschung / Teilprojekt “Social Displays”

Die Technische Universität Chemnitz schreibt eine Doktorandenstelle im Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB 1410) "Hybrid Societies – Humans Interacting with Embodied Digital Technologies" aus. Die Stelle ist ab dem 15. Mai 2020 oder nach Vereinbarung zu besetzen und bis zum 31.12.2023 befristet.
Die Forschungsarbeit des SFB 1410 "Hybrid Societies" hat die Interaktion von Menschen und selbstständig agierenden Maschinen (Embodied Digital Technologies/EDTs) zum Gegenstand. Gemeinsam analysieren Forscherinnen und Forscher aus der Psychologie, den Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, den Bewegungswissenschaften, der Linguistik, der Soziologie, den Rechtswissenschaften, der Physik und der Mathematik die Bedingungen gelingender Koordination von Menschen und Maschinen im öffentlichen Raum.
Die ausgeschriebene Stelle ist im soziologischen Teilprojekt “Social Displays – On the Accountability of Embodied Digital Technologies in Everyday Life” angesiedelt. Das Teilprojekt untersucht die Integration von sogenannten ‚autonomen‘ Fahrzeugen und ‚sozialen‘ Robotern in alltagsweltliche Handlungs- und Kooperationsroutinen. In der empirischen Projektarbeit sollen unterschiedliche anthropomorphe, zoomorphe, fiktive und funktionale Designs untersucht werden, die bei der Entwicklung von EDTs Verwendung finden, um potentielle menschliche Interaktionspartner über die spezifischen kooperativen Merkmale und Fähigkeiten von EDTs und über deren Zurechenbarkeit (accountability) zu informieren. In grundlagentheoretischer Perspektive zielt das Projekt auf die sozialtheoretische Formulierung einer Typologie sozialweltlich in je spezifischer Weise zurechenbarer, gleichwohl nicht-menschlicher Anderer.

– sich in das Doktorandinnen-/Doktorandenprogramm des SFB 1410 einzuschreiben und sich aktiv in die Forschungskolloquien, Vortragsreihen und Workshops des SFB einzubringen,
– sich an der Entwicklung neuer Forschungsmethoden der Professur im Bereich der Analyse von Interfacedesigns sowie am Internationalen DoktorandInnenkolleg "Visuelle Soziologie" zu beteiligen.
Anforderungen:
– Abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (Master/Diplom) im Bereich Soziologie, Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Designtheorie oder in einem vergleichbaren Fach
– Sehr gute Kenntnisse im Bereich der Qualitativen Methoden
– Expertisen im Bereich der Techniksoziologie, der Analyse visueller Sozialkommunikation oder in anderen angrenzenden Forschungsfeldern sind willkommen.
– Die Bereitschaft, sich gleichermaßen mit theoretischen wie empirischen Problemstellungen auseinanderzusetzen.
– Zuverlässigkeit und Teamfähigkeit
– Fließendes Englisch in Wort und Schrift

Doctoral Position in Qualitative Social Research / Subproject “Social Displays” (Salary grade E 13 TV-L, 65%)
Chemnitz University of Technology invites applications for a doctoral position in the Coordinated Research Centre (CRC 1410) Hybrid Societies – Humans Interacting with Embodied Digital Technologies. Employment is offered until December 31st, 2023 starting at May 15st, 2020 or by agreement.
Research Environment: Research in the CRC 1410 Hybrid Societies pertains to the interaction with Embodied Digital Technologies (EDTs) as artificial bodies moving in real or virtual environments. Cooperating researchers from psychology, engineering, computer science, human movement science, language and gesture studies, sociology, law studies, physics, and mathematics scientifically inquire the interaction of humans with EDTs from the level of single actions up to the attribution of intentionality.
The open position belongs to the sociological work area of the subproject “Social Displays – On the Accountability of Embodied Digital Technologies in Everyday Life”. The subproject investigates the integration of EDTs such as driverless cars or artificial companions into the social world’s routines of action and cooperation. The hypothesis of the project is that a reliable cooperation of humans and EDTs presumes the human cooperation partners to be informed clearly about the EDTs’ alignment in the situation and the EDTs’ overall accountability. In its empirical approach, the research project therefore aims to analyze different anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, fictional, and purely functional designs used in the development of EDTs to inform human cooperation partners about an EDT’s specific cooperative features and capabilities. The project systematically asks about the communicative constitution of accountability seeking to reconstruct different social types and taxonomies of accountable non-human others.

Requirements:
– University degree (Master/Diploma) in Sociology, Media and Communication Science, Design Theory, or a similar background
– Strong expertise in Qualitative Methods
– Expertise in Technology Studies, Visual Analysis, or related areas is a plus
– Openness to deal with both theoretical and empirical problems
– Reliability and the ability to work in a team
– Fluent in English (both written and spoken)
