x-post: H-LIS Discussion List on the History of Library and Information Services

The Library as a Cultural Institution
Symposion, September 28-29, 1998

Herzog-August-Bibliothek Wolfenbuettel Bible Hall
Chairman: Dr. Uwe Jochum

There is no doubt that due to the implementation of data systems libraries throughout the world are in a stage of radical change: the former libraries with walls and splendid buildings that housed millions of books printed on paper are now changed into libraries without walls that circulate texts as data files via international networks. This conversion is not only thought of as the end of the good old library, but also as a radical new start. Whereas the access to information has up to now been restricted to certain places and institutions the virtual library promises to end such limitations by giving everyone free access to all electonic texts at any time and from any place. Yet the rhetoric of radical change leaves out of consideration that the logic of pure data transmission supersedes the logic of places that constitutes our cultural memory. This cultural memory is not only a memory of places and events but depends to a very high degree on rituals needing concrete places and institutions like theatres, archives, museums, and libraries. Therefore the conversion of physical libraries into virtual ones deletes the section of our cultural memory that relies on books and libraries as physical objects bound to concrete places. The Wolfenbuettel Symposion will reflect on those two logics =97 the logic = of data transmission versus the logic of concrete places and will try to engage them in conversation.
