February 16 - 21, 1998
This interdisciplinary seminar will retrace the course of American foreign relations from colonial times to World War I. We will discuss the United States' increasing involvement in international politics after the Revolutionary War but also the nation's effort to remain "isolationist." Particular attention will be paid to parallels between early U.S. diplomacy and current events. Students will receive a reader of approximately 500 pages one month prior to the course. During the seminar week participants will meet for three discussion sessions per day while also using the library and the labs in order to develop an idea for a thesis. Successful candidates will earn a "Schein" (credit certificate) from the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg.
Thanks to the generous support of the Fulbright Commission and the Koerberstiftung, accommodations and meals will be provided at no cost at the Leucorea in Wittenberg.
