The Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science, University of Copenhagen has the honour to be the host of the Third Seminar of the History of Sport in Europe in to be held 2. - 6, December 1998. The theme is The history of Educational Institutions, Physical Education and Sport. The seminar will take place at "Idraettens Hus" (House of Sport) where all participants will be lodged.
One hundred years ago physical education in the Danish school system was totally reorganised with teachers' education systematised and firm curricula introduced. The activities, however, were almost exclusively gymnastics and not until after the Second World War did sport play a major role in the school. Furthermore, until then physical education has had almost no relations to the widespread club system, based on voluntary work. There are certain similarities between the development in Denmark and the other Nordic countries. In Europe however, taken as a whole the differencies between the physical education in the school systems have always been big and diverse. The history, the organization, the curriculum, the pedagogy, the gender relations, the chosen doctrines and ideologies and the relations to the ordinary sport system differs very much from country to country. Only very few comparative studies have been made in this area. This seminar could be a major step forward.
