Vth Intensive Seminar in American History For Undergraduate Students:

RACE, CULTURE, GENDER: NEW CONCEPTS OF U.S. FOREIGN RELATIONS

October 4 - 11, 1998

This interdisciplinary seminar will investigate different concepts and methodologies that scholars have recently introduced to understand and interpret the history of American Foreign Relations. Next to established theories such as imperialism," capitalism" and exceptionalism" we find today explanatory concepts emphasizing racism," culture," gender," diseases," environmentalism," and others.

Looking at individual problems in the history of U.S. diplomacy such as Manifest Destiny or the Cold War, we will discuss the relevance and viability of these concepts and ask how such theories might affect or even change our understanding of international relations as well as our individual research projects.

The seminar language is English. Students will receive a reader of approximately 500 pages one month prior to the course. During the seminar week, participants will meet for two to three discussion sessions per day.Students will also use the library and computer labs for their own research. At the end of the week, participants will embark on their own res earch project in order to earn credit (Schein) from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

Accommodations will be provided at no cost at the Leucorea.

The Center for U.S. Studies invites undergraduate students of history, political science, international relations, sociology, and American studies to apply.
