Stuttgart Seminar in Cultural Studies

SESSION V: August 3 - 14, 1998

THE TRANSLATABILITY OF CULTURES

THE FACULTY:

How do cultures differ? How does translation work? What is the range of the translatability of cultures, and where does an assumed translatability turn into a colonial approach? Are there realms of the inaccessible, and should they be maintained and respected? For a while, multiculturalism, whether seen as an asset in and by itself, or as a necessity in post-Cold War societies having to deal with increasing immigrant populations, appeared to be an almost natural stage in the development of civilizations. Recently, however, the controversial Contest of Cultures theory has instigated fears that we may be on the brink of a series of nationalist and fundamentalist backlashes.

Session V of the Stuttgart Seminar in Cultural Studies is going to address some of the most strident issues in this context.

THE STUTTGART SEMINAR The Stuttgart Seminar in Cultural Studies is a forum for academics from all over the world that seeks to promote cultural exchange and understanding. It is intended to provide a forum for multicultural, interdisciplinary dialogue aiming for the development of new theories and practical ideas in the field of Cultural Studies.

Faculty and fellows live and work together in the beautiful environment of the Monrepos Castle Hotel, located ca. 15 m north of the bustling industrial city of Stuttgart at a small lake, right next to the late Baroque Monrepos Castle. The ten-day session comprises lectures (forenoons), classwork (afternoons) as well as a number of cultural events and excursions. Classes are limited to 4-6 fellows working under the guidance of one faculty member. Full board and accomodation are provided.

ADMISSIONS Applications to "Stuttgart Seminar Session V: The Translatability of Cultures" should contain a short CV, a list of publications, and a list indicating preference (1-4) for faculty member(s) the applicant wants to study with. To guarantee a close working atmosphere, only 20 fellows will be selected on a competitive basis. As in past years, and in spite of rising costs, the tuition fee is DM 1.000.-, and full and 50%-fellowships are again available.

Judgement of applications will start April 1, and admissions will be announced on a rolling basis, with the final roster complete by June 1.
