Unity and Diversity in the New Europe

Monday 30 - Tuesday 31 March 1998

The Centre for European Research will host a Conference on Unity and Diversity in the New Europe. The Centre was established at Oxford Brookes University in 1995 in order to promote multidisciplinary research and scholarship in the area of European Studies.

At the outset, Europe was an economic, political and legislative construct. The success of the "European Project", however, was to depend on the development of a genuine cultural and political identity. Unity and Diversity are the two poles which determine the identity (or identities) of the New Europe. The move towards a unified Europe has, in some areas, been accompanied by trends towards fragmentation: it has given rise to a re-awakened sense of belonging, the emergence of regional pressures for independence and a growing emphasis on historical continuities and discontinuities. Similarly, the intensified contact between different cultures seems to suggest that tensions and conflicts are the price of integration.
