Join a community of scholars for a celebration of Hannah Arendt’s centenary birth. Hannah Arendt, an open spirit, was not easily placed within the philosophic trends of her time. Nor did she fit well within the framework of the established academic discourse of her day. This remains true today.
Against the backdrop of Nazi Europe, and as a Jew, Arendt sought to create a world worthy of human habitation. Since the tradition of political philosophy was unable to prevent the rise of totalitarianism, she sought to create a new foundation for political action. In doing so, Arendt sought a new beginning for Europe, America and the world.
Do we need a new beginning today? Gather with us to ask the same questions that Hannah Arendt asked, but now in the framework of the 21st century. What kind of politics do we need today in the face of war and politics of repression, the rise of religious fundamentalism, and a globalization that promotes unequal development?
We welcome papers on the following topics:
- Hannah Arendt’s Philosophy: Then and Now
- Hannah Arendt, the Holocaust and Totalitarianism
- Hannah Arendt, Religion and the Religious Quest
