Politics needs history and uses it to its own ends – for justification and legitimation, for self-presentation and debate, and to anchor itself in time. History is not only the fertile ground upon which society cultivates memory, but also an exceptional resource for political figures. Max Weber’s concept of “political memory” describes the thematic complex which gives these annals their profile.

JPG, the Annals for History and Politics, is the first periodical in the German scholarly world to devote itself entirely to the manifold and often transdisciplinary studies of historical politics and commemorative culture. Its mission is to provide a scholarly forum for the highly diverse and often specialized research on how politics deals with history. Topics range from the legal history of criminal justice and the politics of history and the past to the thematic complex of remembering as it is influenced by the “cultural turn”, all the way to the significance of history in the transition to democracy. JPG unites interdisciplinary perspectives and showcases methodological, theoretical and empirical aspects of recent research on the history of politics and the culture of memory. Particular emphasis is placed on integrating international research by including least one English-language article in each JPG issue.

The annals are divided into five sections: Focus, Workshop and Gallery, News, Current Forum, Finds and Research Report. The guiding concept behind Focus is to throw a broad and varied light on a chosen topic, both in terms of content as well as in the mixture of authors and perspectives. Workshop and Gallery offers an open platform for topical scholarly articles beyond the strict focus of the annals. Current Forum airs debates of broad public relevance on the JPG horizon. Finds presents original sources and articles. And in Research Report, the JPG provides an overview of recently published literature in a selected research field of current interest.
