The Bulletin of the German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington DC publishes:
- essays on German and American history originating from research, lectures or conferences sponsored by the GHI
- research reports on research conducted at the GHI
- conference reports on conferences organized by the GHI
- articles by the winners of the Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize
- interviews with historians
- announcements of GHI fellowships, upcoming events, and GHI news

The Bulletin’s main focus is on 19th and 20th-century German and American history. Recent topics have included: freedom in American and German history, the historical profession in Germany and America, migration, environmental history, transitional justice, American Studies in Germany. Since 2004, the Bulletin publishes a thematic special issue as an annual “Supplement.” The most recent (2004) Supplement is devoted to “American Detente and German Ostpolitik, 1969-1972.”
