The Journal of Medieval History (JMH) is devoted exclusively to the history of Europe in the Middle Ages. There are no limits on the subject matter, provided it is within the medieval period, broadly defined as covering the centuries from the fall of the Roman empire to the Renaissance. Thus, well-established and traditional fields of study such as constitutional and political history remain as important as the latest developments in the approach and scope of social history.

A typical issue includes between three and five articles, chosen to reflect a chronological and geographical range, together with an essay analysing recent work in a specific field of medieval history or a lengthy review of one or more studies of important historiographical writing. The value and importance of visual evidence is fully appreciated and contributors are encouraged to include such material where it is appropriate. Scholars at all stages of their careers are equally welcome: the Journal aims to provide a platform for younger historians, as well as for the more experienced and well known.
