The first decennia of the 20th century brought revolution, war, economic crisis and the rise of totalitarian movements to Europe. Especially the Great War meant a serious test for the European Republic of Letters. Paradoxically it also inspired all kinds of international cooperation during the war and in the interwar period. European intellectuals felt as if European culture as they had known it, had fallen apart and given away to a new regime of rivaling national cultures striving for hegemony. Many intellectuals strongly took sides with their own country, although at the same time many started to think about new ways to rebuild international contacts in Europe.

This colloquium will focus on these international centers of art, science and politics that developed border crossing ideas and activities through their international contacts or international impact in Europe in this period. Focal point will be how and under which circumstances cultural, scientific and ideological exchange and interaction took place. This means, that not the comparison of national cultures, but the transfer of cultural, artistic, scientific and political ideas and ideals between individuals and organizations in the distinct European countries and cities is of interest here. One could think of the reception of certain cultural movements, historical paradigms, philosophical theories, political ideologies, but also of important individuals or universities, political and social institutions, intellectual networks, artist colonies and magazines, as long as they were international oriented and organized and had a more than sole national importance.

The colloquium aims to bring together an international group of young scientists and to promote the international and interdisciplinary cooperation. All young scientists who are studying the field of cultural transfer in Europe or a related topic are invited to send a short summary of the paper they would like to present and a short biography. The deadline is 15th of October 2003.

The colloquium will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the 26 and 27th of February 2004 and is organized by the Huizinga Instituut, University of Amsterdam. Speakers will have 30 minutes to present their papers, either in English or in Dutch. The conference is supposed to be followed by a special publication in which a choice of papers will be presented to a broader academic public.
