A conference on the contribution of history to cultural studies

We invite papers from historians, sociologists, media and cultural scholars on the following topic headings:

1. The Invention of Traditions:
   • History and material culture-comparison between British/Turkish, American/Turkish, British/American contexts;
   • The function of celebrations, ceremonials, etc.
   • The impact of historical changes on social and cultural values (e.g. urbanisation, mobility);
   • Cultural studies as an invented tradition.
2. Hegemony, Individuals and Groups:
   • The construction and deconstruction of stereotypes;
   • The management of time and space:architecture, city planning, factories, discipline and its internalisation;
   • Cultural products--the popular and the populist (music, comics, pulp/science fiction, radio, television, film, advertising).
3. Differences and Oppositions:
   • Traditions and counter-traditions;
   • Oral vs. written histories;
   • The creation of ethnic identities;
   • Cultural implications/ramifications of womens' his/herstories.

The medium of conference is English.
The deadline for paper proposals--a one page abstract--is 15 January 1997
The deadline for registration is 15 March 1997
