This interdisciplinary conference on travel writing and tourism studies will mark the tenth anniversary of the bilingual English/French conference series “Borders & Crossings / Seuils et traverses” (B&C), inaugurated in Derry in 1998 by Professor Tim Youngs (Director, Centre for Travel Writing Studies, Nottingham Trent University) and Dr. Glenn Hooper (Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick). Subsequent conferences have been held in France, Turkey, Great Britain and Italy, and we are pleased to announce that the first non-European conference in the series will be held in Australia.

We welcome papers on a wide range of topics related to travel writing and tourism studies and encourage participants from a variety of disciplines, including cultural geography, anthropology, history, literature and the creative arts. Participants interested in publication opportunities should address the proposed theme of “Time in Travel Writing and Tourism Studies” to be explored throughout the conference. Please click on http://www.languages.unimelb.edu.au/research/conferences/borders_crossings/taking-time-out.html for a more detailed description of this thematic orientation and suggestions for potential panels or papers.

In addition to the academic programme, there will be public events involving presentations by travel editors and authors of travel writing. A travel writing workshop is also envisaged as an optional event open to the public as well as conference attendees and participants.

Please send a 200 word abstract, including your name and title, institutional and disciplinary affiliations, and stating whether the paper addresses the focused theme of “Time in Travel Writing and Tourism Studies” and may therefore be considered for publication. Proposals for panels of three or more participants are also welcome. Presentations will be 20 minutes duration, and will be followed by discussion and questions.

The languages for presentation and publication are English and French.

Abstracts should be sent by email in the body of the message (no attachments please) before February 15, 2008 to the following address: jacqueline.dutton@gmail.com
