Dear subscribers,

I am searching for a third panelist for the upcoming conference of the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era 1750-1850 (http://www.revolutionaryera.org/) being held in February 22-24, 2018, in Philadelphia (USA).

The idea is to compare ceremonies linked with regime changes – both official and non-official – during the revolutionary period. Possibilities are the depositions of kings (Louis XVI, Charles X, Louis Philippe in France, George III in the British colonies…), ceremonies to proclaim independence, and ceremonies to establish a republic. Central questions would be the constitutional or political meaning of these ceremonies, as well as their propagandistic value.

I will present a paper on the deposition ceremonies of Emperor Joseph II in the Austrian Netherlands 1789-1790. By ceremonially divesting their prince, the Netherlanders were in a position to establish a (short-lived) republic. A second panelist will discuss monarchical-like processions as a means to legitimize republican authority in the American colonies (1765-1776).

The proposal deadline for the conference is at the end of October 2017. Therefore, if you are interested please email me before September 15 at klaas.van.gelder@univie.ac.at, so that we can submit the panel proposal in time.

Best wishes,
