Das mittelalterliche Kirchenportal ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein Ort der Transformation. An der Schwelle zum Kirchenraum treffen unterschiedliche Sphären aufeinander und durchdringen sich: weltlich – kirchlich, körperlich – geistig, irdisch – himmlisch. Diese besondere Situation findet vielfach Niederschlag in Ikonographie und formaler Gestaltung. Zugleich sind Kirchenportale selbst Gegenstand von Veränderungen: Bis in die jüngste Zeit hinein wechseln sie durch Überarbeitungen, farbliche Fassungen und Restaurierungsmaßnahmen ihr Aussehen. Die Moderne schließlich hat Portale zu Kunstwerken erklärt. Mit dieser Statusänderung ging eine weitere Metamorphose einher: Das mittelalterliche Portal wurde zum ästhetischen Objekt und damit zum Ausstellungsgegenstand mit alternativen Präsentationsformen.
Die internationale Abschlusstagung des BMBF – Projekts „Portale als Orte der Transformation“ (Universität Bamberg, Lehrstuhl für mittelalterliche Kunstgeschichte, Professur für Restaurierungswissenschaft in der Baudenkmalpflege, Professur für Bauforschung und Baugeschichte) wird zentrale Fragen zu Kontinuität und Veränderung mittelalterlicher Portale in verschiedenen Sektionen diskutieren:

Sektion 1: Konzeption mittelalterlicher Portale. Das Zusammenspiel von Architektur und Bauplastik (Bauplanung, Entwurfstechnik, Proportionen, Raumanordnung)

Sektion 2: Konstruktion mittelalterlicher Portale. Bautechnische Analysen zur Dokumentation von Transformationsprozessen (Gründung, Verzahnung konstruktiver Einheiten, Mauertechnik, Steinsorten, Statik, Bauablauf)

Sektion 3: Bildprogramme. Das Portal als Ort spiritueller Transformation im Mittelalter (Ikonographie, Text und Bild, eschatologische Themen, Kosmos/Himmelsrichtungen)

Sektion 4: Mittelalterliche Bronze- und Holztüren (Türen, Türbänder, Beschläge, Schließ- und Verschlussmechanismen)

Sektion 5: Portale und Portalanlagen im Wandel. Profane und liturgische Nutzung (Mittelalterliche Prozessionsliturgie, Nutzerhierarchie, geistliche Spiele und Rechtshandlungen)

Sektion 6: Anpassungen, Veränderungen und Überformungen an Portalen (Zeitschichten der Restaurierung, Sanierungsmaßnahmen, Oberflächenbehandlungen, Erhaltung, Ergänzungen durch Kopien, Kopiertechniken in Stein, Gips und künstlichen Materialien)

Sektion 7: Das Portal als Kunstwerk (museale Inszenierung, Illumination, Umnutzung, virtuelle Präsentation)

The medieval church portal is in many respects a place of transformation. At the threshold of a church, various spheres converge and meet: secular – ecclesiastic, corporeal – spiritual, earthly – divine. Iconography and formal design offer ample evidence of this unique situation. At the same time, church portals themselves are objects of change: their appearances are constantly shifting due to modification, chromatic reworking and restorative endeavours. After all, modernism declared portals works of art, and this change of status was accompanied by a further metamorphosis: The medieval portal became an aesthetic object and thereby an exhibit with alternative forms of presentation.
The international final conference of the BMBF Project „Portals as Places of Transformation“ (University of Bamberg, Chair in Medieval Art History, Professorship in Building Preservation Sciences, Professorship in Building History and Building Archaeology) will provide various conference sections focusing on central issues of continuity and change as they pertain to medieval portals:

Section 1: Conceptual design of medieval portals. The interplay of architecture and sculpture (building design, design methods, proportions, room arrangement)

Section 2: Construction of medieval portals. Structural analyses for the documentation of transformation processes (footing, interlinking of constructive units, masonry technique, types of stone, structural analysis, construction process)

Section 3: Iconographic programmes. The portal as a place of spiritual transformation in the Middle Ages (Iconography, text and image, eschatological themes, cosmos/cardinal directions)

Section 4: Medieval bronze and wood doors (doors, hinges, mountings, closing and latching mechanisms)

Section 5: Changing portals. Secular and liturgical use (medieval procession liturgies, user hierarchy, liturgical dramas and legal acts)

Section 6: Adaptations, alterations and modifications of portals
(restoration layers, renovation measures, surface treatments, maintenance, supplementation using copies, copying techniques in stone, plaster und synthetic materials)

Section 7: The portal as a work of art (museum displays, illuminations, repurposing, virtual presentations and representations)

Le portail médiéval d’une église est de plusieurs manières le théâtre de transformations. Différentes sphères se rencontrent au seuil de l’enceinte sacrée et s’y entremêlent : profane – ecclésiastique, matérielle – spirituelle, terrestre – divine. Cette situation particulière se retrouve fréquemment dans l’iconographie et la conception formelle. Les portails des églises font en même temps l’objet de changements : jusqu’à récemment, leurs apparences furent modifiées par des remaniements, des changements de couleurs et des travaux de restaurations. L’ère moderne a enfin érigé ces portails au rang d’œuvres d’art. Ce changement de statut entraîna une autre métamorphose : le portail médiéval obtint alors également son caractère esthétique et devint par-là même un objet d’exposition aux diverses formes de présentation.
La conférence internationale finale du projet du BMBF « Les portails, lieux de transformation » (Université de Bamberg, chaires pour l’Histoire de l’Art Médiéval, pour la Restauration et pour l’Archéologie du Bâtiment) se penchera sur des questions centrales de la continuité et de l’évolution des portails médiévaux, dans plusieurs sessions :

1ère session : La conception des portails médiévaux. La synergie entre l’architecture et la sculpture (planification, technique de conception, proportions, aménagement spatial)

2nde session : La construction des portails médiévaux. Analyses des techniques de construction et documentation des transformations
(fondation, interaction des unités de construction, technique de maçonnerie, type de pierre, équilibre statique, processus de construction)

3ème session : Les programmes iconographiques. Le portail en tant que lieu de la transformation spirituelle au Moyen Âge
(iconographie, textes et images, thèmes eschatologiques, cosmos/points cardinaux)

4ème session : Portes médiévales en bois et en bronze
(portes, charnières, ferrures, systèmes de fermeture et de verrouillage)

5ème session : L’évolution des portails et de leur environnement. Utilisations profane et liturgique (liturgie des processions médiévales, hiérarchie des usagers, jeux spirituels actes juridiques)

6ème session : Les adaptations et les transformations réalisées sur les portails (strates des restaurations, assainissements, traitements des surfaces, conservation, complémentation par le biais de copies, méthodes de copies en pierre, plâtre et divers matériaux artificiels)

7ème session : Le portail en tant qu’œuvre d’art (mises en scène au musée, spectacles son et lumière, changements des fonctions)
