Diese erste in der Schweiz organisierte internationale Konferenz zum antiken Boiotien ist Teil des Schweizerisches Nationalfonds-Projekts (SNFS) „Old and New Powers“ (Förderzeitraum 2014-2018). Im Gegensatz zu früheren Untersuchungen stehen hier nicht die Region Boiotien selbst oder der Boiotische Bund im Zentrum; stattdessen geht es in diesem Projekt darum, die Beziehungen Boiotiens zu anderen, auswärtigen Mächten zu analysieren. Dies ist auch das Thema der Konferenz.
Die Konferenz geht dabei über den chronologischen Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes (Archaik bis Späthellenismus) hinaus, indem sie die Region und ihre Aussenbeziehungen von der Bronzezeit bis zur Spätantike behandelt; hierbei stehen Geschichte, Epigraphik und Archäologie als wissenschaftliche Disziplinen im Mittelpunkt. Die Vorträge thematisieren unter anderem das Verhältnis zu den Nachbarn, die Grenzen, Religion und Heiligtümer, Mythen, Einflüsse auf die lokale Produktion von Artefakten, aber auch generell politische und wirtschaftliche Beziehungen mit anderen Regionen und Mächten ausserhalb Boiotiens. Die Konferenz bietet Einblick in neue und unveröffentlichte Forschungen, da ein Grossteil der eingeladenen Spezialisten und Spezialisten an wichtigen Forschungsprojekten, Surveys, Ausgrabungen und Inschriftenprojekten beteiligt ist. So entsteht zum ersten Mal ein umfassendes Bild von den Beziehungen Boiotiens mit seinen antiken Nachbarn, was eine erhebliche Erweiterung der bisherigen Kenntnisse über diese dynamische Region verspricht.

Im Rahmen der Konferenz findet auch eine Postersitzung statt (Organisation Roy van Wijk). Die Poster sollen im Format, A1 oder A0 vorgestellt werden (Hochformat, max. 1500 Wörter, klare Sprache). Sprachen: Englisch, Französisch oder Deutsch. Vorschläge sind bis zum 30. April 2017 willkommen.
