Die achten Jahrestagung des Exzellenzclusters "Asien und Europa im globalen Kontext" findet vom 12. bis 14. Oktober 2016 am Karl Jaspers Zentrum für Transkulturelle Forschung an der Universität Heidelberg in Kooperation mit dem Forum Transregionale Studien, der Max Weber Stiftung und dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut statt.

Das Thema der diesjährigen Konferenz lautet „Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture”. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, welchen komplexen Wechselwirkungen kulturelles Erbe im politischen und gesellschaftlichen Diskurs ausgesetzt ist, wie es sich definiert und welche Kräfte beim Prozess des Erbauens, Erhaltens und Zerstörens wirken. Beleuchtet werden soll auch, welche Auswirkungen kulturelles Erbe in Form von Artefakten, Texten, Bildern, Musik und ähnlichem auf Politik, Gesellschaft, Umwelt und Wissenschaft hat und somit zur Sinn- und Identitätsstiftung und zur Stabilität eines kulturellen, politischen oder gesellschaftlichen Gefüges beiträgt. Der Fokus der Konferenz liegt allerdings nicht nur auf dem Prozess des Schaffens, Definierens und Erhaltens von Kulturgütern, sondern auch darauf, wie deren Zerstörung, Verfall oder „Missbrauch“ bewusst eingesetzt werden.

Programm

Eröffnet wird die Jahrestagung am 12. Oktober um 18:00 Uhr mit einem Vortrag der Historikerin Prof. Nayanjot Lahiri (Ashoka University, Delhi). Unter dem Titel „Heritage at the Intersection of Politics and People – India’s Archaeological Heritage” spricht sie über den Einfluss der Politik auf das kulturelle Erbe und den Umgang mit historischen Stätten in Indien. In einem zweiten Keynote-Vortrag am 13. Oktober um 18:00 Uhr beschäftigt sich der Schriftsteller und Literaturwissenschaftler Sinan Antoon (New York University) mit der Zerstörung von Kulturgütern, die die Kriege im Irak und Syrien mit sich gebracht haben, und wie Wissenschaftler und Künstler mit den Ruinen dieser Ruinen umgehen. Die Morgenpanels, jeweils zwei am 13. und 14. Oktober 2016, werden Plenarsitzungen sein. An den Nachmittagen finden neun parallellaufende Panels in unterschiedlichen Formaten statt, die dazu gedacht sind, einen intensiveren Meinungsaustausch voranzutreiben. Die Tagung wird mit einer Abschlussdiskussion enden.
