Especially in the light of current political movements in numerous countries, the 19th century as the "age of nationalism" in Europe demands further study. Following Stefan Germer's diagnosis that images are "the decisive means for the creation of national communities", this workshop for young scholars seeks to investigate phenomena and strategies of nation building in the arts in the long 19th century. By both discussing methodological aspects and examining different case studies, the workshop seeks to reassess constructions of national identities in Europe in all forms of the visual arts, putting a special focus on international perspectives.

As part of this international workshop for PhD candidates, participants will present papers in a conference format on Fri, June 29.

The workshop takes place thanks to the kind support of the Giessener Hochschulgesellschaft.
