You want to pursue a doctoral project about Eastern and Southeastern Europe in history, cultural studies or social sciences, but you do not have a final dissertation proposal yet?

The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies (Munich and Regensburg, Germany) invites applications from graduates and advanced MA students from non-German universities for the international workshop "Preparing for a Doctoral Project", which will take place in Munich from June 27 to 29, 2016.

The workshop aims at supporting students who have finished a MA programme or are in the final phase of their graduate studies to prepare a PhD project, with which they can apply to a respective programme at a German university or for a scholarship from the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, in particular.

The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies is a cooperative post-graduate programme jointly organized by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Munich and the University of Regensburg.

The School is funded by the German Excellence Initiative and was established in November 2012. The Graduate School organizes a comprehensive and competitive doctoral programme with an interdisciplinary profile: its faculty comes from history, literary and language studies, art history, theatre studies, social sciences, and law.

The Graduate School also studies the relationships and entanglements of Eastern and Southeastern Europe with other parts of the world. Therefore, specialists from other area studies (e.g. Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, North American Studies, European Studies) are included in the School's faculty as well.
The research of the Graduate School addresses three broad fields:
- Origins and Forms of Social and Political Change
- Cultural Systems
- Infrastructure, Migration and Transfer of Knowledge

As part of its recruitment program, the Graduate School organizes an annual workshop for graduates from non-German universities in order to support them preparing an application for the Graduate School. We will invite up to six graduate students, who will work with researchers of the Graduate School on potential dissertation projects. They will also be informed about the particularities of academia and PhD studies in Germany. The workshop is held in English. Good knowledge of both languages is mandatory.

The Graduate School will cover the travel costs of the invited participants and their accommodation in twin rooms in Munich.

Workshop participants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievements and their preliminary dissertation project.

If you are interested in participating in the preparatory workshop, please submit your application in English or German online at https://portal.graduatecenter-lmu.de/ost-suedosteuropa

The application must include:
- short CV
- abstract for a dissertation proposal (max. three pages)
- abstract of your MA thesis (max. four pages)
- copy of your last university certificate

Application deadline: May 8, 2016.
