The Erfurt Spatio-Temporal Studies Group will be hosting the international conference "Spacetime of the Imperial", which will take place in Erfurt and Gotha from October 8th to October 11th.

At our conference, we will be discussing presentations on various concepts of spatio-temporal relations from antiquity to the present in connection with imperial regimes systems of power. The conference is interdisciplinary in scope. One significant point of departure for our conference is the broad discourse initiated by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt’s Empire (2000). This discourse has transcended traditional borderlines between disciplines in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. An end of the debate is not in sight.

Against this background the conference aims to gain new and different perspectives on the imperial developed within disciplines like history, cartography, religious studies, literature and media studies, philosophy and anthropology. These outlooks are focused on the dimension of spatio-temporal relations inherent to different imperial concepts and practices, a perspective which has seldom been the focus of academic research.

By linking concepts of the imperial and the category of spacetime, the, analysis of imperial orders and related discourses, as well as scientific discourses on the imperial, we are hoping to open up a completely new field. Altogether the conference intends to add a new point of view to cultural studies and give new impulses to recent debates on the imperial.
