The CENDARI project (Collaborative European Digital Archive Infrastructure) invites applications to its second summer school, to be held 21-25 July in Berlin on the theme “Researching the First World War in a Digital Environment.”

The interdisciplinary five-day program is geared especially toward early-career historians (doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows) investigating the First World War as well as toward archivists, librarians, and e-scientists that engage with or specialize in this time period. Applications from researchers in other academic disciplines working on the First World War are also welcome. No prior experience with digital research methods is required.

Through a mixture of lectures and interactive hands-on sessions held in English, participants will learn the fundamentals of transnational and comparative First World War research in a digital environment as well as how to engage collaboratively with other researchers and professionals in such an environment. CENDARI is facilitating these activities through the construction of an online research infrastructure, an initial version of which will be available for students to work in during the summer school. Authorities in First World War history and the digital humanities, from both the project and beyond, will lead sessions.

To apply, fill out the application form here: http://www.cendari.eu/summer-school-2014/. The closing date for applications is 14 April 2014. Successful applicants will be notified of decision by 20 May and asked to accept a position or not by 26 May. A number of travel bursaries (€300) will be available on a competitive basis to early career researchers in order to defray the costs of attending the school. Funded by the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme for Research, bursaries can be applied for directly through the application form and will be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s ranking during the evaluation process.
