The setup of modern Europe is a fundamental merit of Christian democratic policy. Initial collaboration existed already between the world wars. After 1945 it was intensified until during the 1970s the amalgamation of Christian democrats on the European level took place. Early cooperation of Christian democratic politicians (NEI) emanated from individual campaigners and party-independent groups. These were mixed forms of parties and personalities. This changed with the foundation of the EUCD in 1965 and the European People’s Party in 1976. The EPP’s establishment stemmed from a requirement of Christian democratic parliamentarians who had already formed a faction within the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community and the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Community. The dynamic developments inevitably required a European party organisation. The European network of Christian democracy coupled the idea of a people’s party with the reality of an ever closer European Community. Christian democracy on a European level aspired to bring to mind the intellectual values of European culture and to solve socio-political assignments by ensuring democratic principles. Main ideas were the acceleration of integration and the construction of a liberal society based on Christian principles.

The network formed by Christian democrats within the European multi-level governance (system) of the 20th century occupies centre stage at this workshop. Developments of these networks shall be traced; the crucial milestones of an ever closer association of Christian democracy in Europe shall be reviewed.

The workshop takes place in Berlin on 18 and 19 November 2014 and is especially addressed to young researchers who work on this topic.

Please send your exposé (maximum 2500 signs) by no later than 15 March 2013 to Prof. Dr. Hanns Jürgen Küsters (hanns.kuesters@kas.de) or to PD Dr. Jürgen Nielsen-Sikora (juergen.nielsen-sikora@kas.de). The selection of the contributions will take place by the end of May.
