Die ganze Erde vom All aus gesehen - diese Aufnahme, die seit den 1960er-Jahren zur Ikone einer "ganzheitlichen" Betrachtung des "Systems Erde" wurde, ist zentraler Bezugspunkt für Ausstellung und Konferenz unter dem Titel THE WHOLE EARTH. Mehr als jede andere Abbildung prägt sie seither die populäre Vorstellung vom Zeitalter der Globalisierung, von Visionen eines World Wide Web bis hin zur Klimadiskussion. Der Blaue Planet prangte auch auf dem Titel des "Whole Earth Catalog", der 1968 erstmals in Kalifornien erschien und zum identitätsstiftenden Kompendium einer Gegenkultur avancierte, die Natur-Romantiker und Technologie-Verehrer, Psychedelia und Computerkultur vereinte und damit entscheidende Impulse für die Umweltbewegung ebenso wie für den Aufstieg der digitalen Netzwerk-Kultur gab.

Von Öko-Psychedelia zum Internet-Neoliberalismus: Die Diskussionen der Konferenz kreisen um Fragen nach dem Erbe der kalifornischen Gegenkultur. Wie kam es, dass einige ihrer Konzepte zu globalen Prinzipien neuer kapitalistischer "Frontiers" wurden? Panels erörtern die historischen Quellen und Bezüge von Diskurs- und Politikfeldern wie der Ökologiebewegung, der Kybernetik, der antikonformistischen Kulturen, der neuen Kunstpraxen im Zeichen der Entgrenzung sowie deren Transformationen bis zum globalistischen Netzwerkkapitalismus der 1990er-Jahre. Untersucht werden damit auch die Hintergrundbedingungen jener Diskurse, die heute im Begriff vom Anthropozän verhandelt, aktualisiert oder vergessen werden.

THE WHOLE EARTH exhibition and conference take as their central reference point the image of the Earth as seen from outer space. In the 1960s, this photograph of our planet in its entirety became an icon of a "holistic" view of the Earth as a "system". Ever since then, more than any other image, it has shaped the popular perception of the era of globalization - from visions of a World Wide Web to the climate debate. The Blue Planet also graced the cover of the "Whole Earth Catalog". From its first appearance in California in 1968, the publication advanced to become an identity-forming compendium of a counterculture that united nature-loving romantics and technology worshippers, psychedelia and the computer culture, providing key impetus for the environmental movement as well as the rise of the digital net culture.

From eco-psychedelia to Internet neoliberalism: The conference will revolve around questions of the legacy of the California counterculture. How did some of its concepts become global principles of new capitalistic "frontiers"? Panel discussions will explore the historical sources of, and connections between, discursive and political issues such as the ecological movement, cybernetics, anti-conformist cultures, new artistic practices that dissolve boundaries, and the transformations in these areas right up to the globalist network capitalism of the 1990s. Thus, the conference investigates the background conditions of the discourses that today, in the framework of the Anthropocene, are being negotiated, updated, or - in some cases - forgotten.
