September 2012 erbeten an:

April 2013 marks the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On this occasion and in memory of Arno Lustiger, the lately deceased chronicler of the Jewish Resistance in World War II, the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish Studies Potsdam and the Deutsches Polen-Institut Darmstadt will organize an international expert conference. This conference will take place in cooperation with the Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand Berlin and the Centrum Badań nad Zagładą Żydów.

Conference dates: April 7th-9th, 2013
Location: Berlin

This conference will reflect the different conditions, facets and forms of Jewish resistance and activities during the period of Nazi rule, occupation and extermination policies. Several thematic panels are planned.

Special attention will be given to Poland. Not only were Nazi extermination policies carried out on Polish territory for a particularly long time and with a particular intensity, but Poland was also the place where almost the entire range of Jewish resistance appeared. The uprising of the Jewish underground movement in the Warsaw Ghetto in April 1943 marked the most famous example of the bravery and resoluteness of the Jewish resistance.

The conference will also focus on Jewish resistance in other Nazi occupied European countries.

The main topics planned for the conference are:

- Jewish resistance on Polish territory (annexed territories, the General Government, Lithuania, occupied Eastern territories); for example, Ghetto uprisings, uprisings in concentration camps, escapes and support for fleeing Jews, Jewish activists in the national and in the communist resistance movements (in comparative analysis)

- Country-specific studies; for example, focusing on occupied countries, Axis powers and collaborators, neutral countries and Jewish resistance, the Jews in Palestine and the resistance in Europe, Jewish communities in Allied countries

- Basic framework conditions of Jewish resistance; for example: the relationship to the national/communist resistance movements, toward the non-Jewish population, living conditions, chances for survival, forced labor, surveillance, persecution

- Different forms of Jewish resistance; for example: escape – rescue – illegal underground activities, armed resistance, acts of sabotage, oppositional propaganda, cultural self-assertion, eyewitness testimony as a form of resistance

- Individual aspects; for example: gender, individual resistance groups, individual personal biographies of resistance fighters, comparative transnational studies on Jewish resistance in the occupied countries, problems with sources and records

- Research – Remembrance - Commemoration – Learning: forms of perception, current state of research, artistic processing, (auto-)biographies, memorials, state of teaching in and out of schools

The conference languages will be German and English.
Proposals in English or German (including an abstract of 1-2 pages, a short CV in table form and information on academic affiliation) are requested by September 1st, 2012. Please send your proposal to:
