Das Symposium zum Thema "Les espaces européens - Europäische Räume" ist die zweite wissenschaftliche Veranstaltung im Rahmen einer geplanten deutsch-französischen (hier sächsisch-bretonischen) Veranstaltungsreihe unter der übergreifenden Thematik "Global Challenges for Sustainable Development". Ziel der Veranstaltungsreihe, und damit auch des 2011 geplanten Symposiums "Les espaces européens - Europäische Räume", sind die Identifizierung und der Ausbau gemeinsamer Forschungsschwerpunkte für die Entwicklung europäischer Forschungsprojekte, insbesondere auch zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses an den bretonischen bzw. sächsischen Universitäten. Weiterhin sollen die Veranstaltungen die Chancen gemeinsamer Antragsvorhaben im Rahmen der europäischen Forschungsförderung (Europäisches Forschungsrahmenprogramm, European Research Council etc.) deutlich verbessern.

Das Symposium ist interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sein Anliegen ist es, durch die Bündelung und Weiterentwicklung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse an den beteiligten Hochschulen Synergien für gemeinsame weiterführende Vorhaben zu entwickeln und zu einer Stärkung des deutsch-französischen und europäischen Forschungsraumes beizutragen.
