Call for Papers

Max and Hilde Kochmann Summer School for PhD Students in European Jewish History and Culture 2011 n Frankfurt am Main

Applications are invited for a workshop for PhD students in European Jewish History and Culture organised by the Centre for German-Jewish Studies (CGJS) at the University of Sussex (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/cgjs) and the Martin Buber Chair in Jewish Thought and Philosophy at the Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main (http://www.evtheol.uni-frankfurt.de/buber/index.html) that will take place from 6-10 July 2011 in Frankfurt am Main. The purpose of this tradition of annual workshops that began in 2009 is to create an interdisciplinary network of younger scholars engaged in any area of European Jewish history, thought, and culture from the early modern to modern periods. This year’s focus will be on early modern, modern and contemporary Jewish history as well as on modern Jewish thought. Participants will be given the opportunity to present and discuss their projects in an informal and welcoming atmosphere with leading scholars in the field.

Participating faculty in 2011 will be Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schüler-Springorum (Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, Berlin), Prof. Dr. Andreas Gotzmann (University of Erfurt) and Prof. Dr. Christian Wiese (University of Frankfurt).

This year we particularly encourage applications of students working on projects outside the area of German-Jewish history (participants of the 2009 workshop are welcome to re-apply). A separate call for papers inviting applications for projects devoted to German Jewry will be published for a workshop organised by the Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Leo Baeck Instituts (WAG). Both workshops will join forces at the University of Frankfurt, thus enabling a dialogue between research students in German-Jewish and European-Jewish history, thought, and culture.

Participants will be invited to attend the 4th International Conference on Jewish Enlightenment: Haskalah and Religion (co-organised by the Martin Buber-Chair in Jewish Thought and Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt, the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex and the Bar Ilan University, Ramat Gan) that will take place in Frankfurt from 3-6 July 2011.

Travel expenses, accommodation and meals for the Max and Hilde Kochmann Summer School will be provided by the CGJS at Sussex. Depending on funding, accommodation for the duration of the Haskalah conference will be provided as well.

Students from Central and Eastern Europe are especially encouraged to apply; individual candidates from Israel and the United States will also be considered, but may be asked to contribute towards their flight costs.

Candidates should send (by email) a 3-5-page proposal outlining their PhD project, a C.V. and one letter of recommendation (by the supervisor or any other relevant scholar with expertise on their topic) by 30 April 2011 to:
