Historical climatology came to life about fifty years ago. Currently, this research field is being studied by a few historians as well as geographers and it is subdivided into three parts:

1) Into the reconstruction of past climates on the basis of direct and indirect information from written sources (in particular, reconstructions of temperature and precipitation series from proxy information). In this aspect, historical climatology is a subfield of paleoclimatology;

2) into historical climate impact research;

3) into the history of science and cultural history of climate.

All three areas will be subject of the conference and will be discussed, both, in the context of the general development of the field of climatology, as well as in the context of anthropogenic climate change. The first section of the conference will be dedicated to presenting the state of the art while later sections will portray future perspectives of historical climatology. In sum, the conference is a strategy meeting, which aims at providing a handbook-like overview over the research field, as well as augmenting the organization and networking of the scholars involved.

The organizers call for papers to be presented in section 2, entitled “Fresh Ideas”. Papers for this section can either be subsumed under one of the three research foci mentioned above, or they may present ideas and subjects connecting those subfields. As the title of the section implies, the innovative content of the paper is crucial. Such a paper may, for example, present new methods, new theories or new subjects of study in the field of historical climatology (i.e. an expansion of the research field).

In order to be able to assess the innovative content of proposals, we suggest that abstracts be at least one page, but no more than two pages long. The organizers will view the proposals and will chose a selection of papers. The authors selected for the section will be invited to submit a full paper which should be ready by June 30, 2011. All papers will be circulated among participants before the conference. Papers must be in English.

Schedule:

- Until March 31, 2011: Proposals for the section “Fresh Ideas”, min. 1 page, max. 2 pages in English, German or French.

- Until April 10, 2011: Selection of papers by the conference organizers

- Until June 30, 2011: Submission of full papers for the conference (ca. 10 pages in English)

- Conference Date: September 5-6, 2011, German Historical Institute, Paris.

We are looking forward to a lively conference.
