Fourth International Conference: German Theatre History Abroad
June 13-15, 2001 at Lund University, Sweden.

German-Language Theatre Abroad from the 17th Century to Today: Institutions, History, Goals
1. THEATRES: Itinerant players, permanent theatres, puppet theatres, circus
- their sponsors, buildings, ensembles, administration
2. GERMAN CULTURAL VALUES ABROAD: programmes, repertory, productions, dramatic
subject matter, texts, adaptations and translations
3. ACTORS AND DIRECTORS: biographies, actors' agencies, contracts, rules
for actors
4. THEATRE PUBLIC AND RECEPTION: Who formed the audience? What was the reception
like? In what media was reception recorded?
5. MULTICULTURAL ISSUES: German-language models & influences on indigenous
beginnings/traditions
6. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES: Source studies, archives and libraries, collections
of theatre documents
Proposals for papers in English or German with a half-page summary are invited by March 15, 2001. Theatre historians, Germanists, Artistic Directors and others interested in German-language Theatres abroad, not just in the Baltic, are invited toparticipate. Speakers have 20 minutes for the paper and 10 minutes for questions. A short CV should also accompany the proposal and summary. Persons presenting a paper should become members of the Thalia Germanica society. New members are welcome at all times and are entitled to have their paper considered for publication in our Proceedings series. Papers should be submitted on disc with two copies in paper format at the conference. Selected papers should not exceed 20 pages with illustrations.
Possible excursions include Copenhagen, sites of former "German" theatres, the Royal Library, as well as meetings with Danish theatre historians; additional possibilities include travel in southern Sweden (Sk=E5ne) with visits to its medieval churches, old towns, fishing villages, and the Baltic Sea.
