The linguistic construction of Europe: migrant elites and the cultural functions of English. The focus of this colloquium is on the linguistic identity of Europe and its emerging multilingual elite. The main questions are:
is there a new "itinerant" culture of highly skilled migrants in Europe?
what role does multilingualism play in the construction of the ethnic identity of this new mobile middle class?
to what extent is this new middle class an agent of a new European identity?
what is the role of English in the process of constructing Europe's linguistic identity?
We are looking for papers on these questions from scholars from a wide range of disciplines like Linguistics/ Sociolinguistics, Anthropology, Cultural Geography and History. A final panel discussion will be held after the paper session(s) to discuss the questions raised above.
