Introduction

Today the media cannot be ignored, they have become an indispensable part of everyday life all over the world. Scientific research on media and media use have also increased significantly - only in social and cultural anthropology this area has been neglected to a large extent. Media anthropology is being practised mainly in two ways: as research and as applied science. Research is dealing with scientific reflections on media as cultural practices and the task of the applied science is communicating anthropology to the public. This Summer School is supposed to reflect on media both ethnographically and theoretically. As aspects of praxis always influence our images of science and media we have to ask ourselves how we can dissolve universalistic discourses on media in order to overcome ethnocentric and pessimistic viewpoints. The aim of the program is to explore and study the social and cultural dimensions of media and develop an anthropological approach to media which has not been available in scientific landscape yet. The Summer School provides an opportunity to young graduates to focus on media anthropology and to meet some of the few experts in this field for intensive discussions and exchange of thoughts. It is intended to be a starting point for an international network of professionals and young scholars on new ideas and trends in media anthropology.
