The Center for U.S. Studies proudly announces a student seminar on the 500-level in Wittenberg, Germany, on German-American Relations, 1871-1914
14 - 21 February 1999

This interdisciplinary seminar will retrace the course of German-American relations during the period that in U.S. history marked the "Gilded Age" and the "Progressive era" while in Germany, it is known simply as the "imperial period." We will discuss the rise and fall of a mutual friendship that was soon to be shattered by economic interests, imperialist aspirations, and cultural misunderstandings on both sides. Particular attention will be paid to the socio-cultural angle of German-American relations, such as exchange programs, tourism, and the arts. Knowledge of German and English is prerequisite. Students will receive a reader of approximately 500-800 pages one month prior to the course. During the seminar week, participants will meet for two to three discussion sessions per day. At the same time, each student will develop an idea for a research paper to be completed within six months after the end of the seminar in order to earn credit from the Martin-Luther-Universitdt Halle-Wittenberg. Successful applicants will receive a stipend which will cover tuition and fees as well as accommodations and meals at the Leucorea. The Center for U.S. Studies invites undergraduate students of history, politics, international relations, sociology, and American studies to apply. For an application, send a cover letter a curriculum vitae and one letter of recommendation from an academic adviser to:
