Political corruption

The Princeton University - Central European University Joint Conference on Corruption Project sponsored by the Open Society Institute and the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies, Princeton University announces a call for individual research proposals in the field of political corruption in Central and Eastern Europe. The competition is intended to encourage original research exploring the historical aspects (not earlier than the second half of the 19th century) as well as present forms of corruption in the public sphere, its sociological characteristics as well as makro-economic effects. Applicants of all related fields are welcome. Grantees are expected to do individual research and submit a paper in English (10,000-15,000 words) summing up its results.

Priority is given to the following topics:

* Corruption becoming the norm in society, the role of the media; public opinion on corruption

* Anti-corruption measures, conflict of interest legislation

* The impact of corruption on transition economies, the cost of corruption

Successful applicants will receive a monthly grant of USD 200 for the research period of four months. The first installment of USD 400 is to be paid when the grant is awarded to successful applicants and a second installment of USD 400 is to be paid upon completion of the project when the paper is submitted. The best papers may be invited to the Princeton University - Central European University Joint Conference on Corruption to be held in Budapest between 30 October - 8 November 1999.

Application deadline: 31 March 1999.

Applications will be evaluated by a special selection committee set up by the Princeton University - Central European University Joint Conference on Corruption Project. The selection procedure will be finalized, and applicants informed by the end of April 1999. The research is supposed to be carried out in May-August 1999 and first versions of the papers are to be submitted by 15 September 1999.

All applications must be presented in English on the application form provided. It must be accompanied by a description of the proposed research, a curriculum vitae and two letters of reference. These should be written on the forms enclosed and they are to be addressed to the Princeton University - Central European University Joint Conference on Corruption Project, Legal Studies Department, CEU H-1051 Budapest, Nador utca 9. Application forms can be obtained from the local Soros foundation offices free of charge or directly from from this address. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
