Diasporas and Ethnic Migrants in 20th Century Europe

<DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION JANUARY 15, 1999

The Lehrstuhl Bevoelkerungswissenschaft (Chair for Population Studies) at Humboldt University Berlin is pleased to host an International Conference. The conference will focus on ethnic migration in 20th century Europe with special emphasis on Germany, Hungary, Israel, Russia/the former Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia. Applicants are encouraged to submit abstracts for papers. Papers will be circulated four weeks in advance. The deadline for turning in the papers is March 31, 1998. The conference is open to the social sciences and humanities, including law and economics. Ph. D. candidates and post-docs are particularly encouraged to apply.

Papers may include the following topics:

- minority rights and ethnic migration
- 'homeland' politics
- ethnic politics/ethno-nationalism and ethnic migration
- state formation and ethnic migration
- prevention and monitoring of ethnic migration
- majority-minority relations in the context of migration
- ethnic migration patterns and systems
- ethnic 'unmixing' of peoples
- demographic change as a consequence of ethnic migration
- ethnic migration as forced migration
- integration of ethnic migrants

The conference language will be English. Limited subsidies to cover travel costs will be available. Accommodation and food will be provided.
