THE VICTORIAN SOCIETY & PRINZ ALBERT GESELLSCHAFT
1999 CONFERENCE: LONDON STAGE, 8-11 JULY:

PRINCE ALBERT AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION IN ENGLAND AND IN GERMANY IN THE 19th CENTURY

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Contributions are invited from Germany and the UK for the London stage of the joint Victorian Society/Prinz-Albert-Gesellschaft Conference on `Prince Albert and the Development of Education in England and Germany in the 19th century. The conference will be held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, from 8-11 July.

The London conference will focus on the following areas:

Those wishing to present papers are asked to submit a synopsis of 100 words (in English or German) to Dr Willim Filmer-Sankey, The Victorian Society, 1 Priory Gardens, Bedford Park, London W4 1TT( tel +44 181 994 1019, fax +44 181 995 4895), to arrive no later than 31 January 1999.

In preparing synopses, contributors should note that:

- papers should be no longer than 30 minutes.
- the conference is intended to appeal to a non-specialist audience, drawn from members of the Victorian Society, educationalists and historians, and those with a general interest in Anglo-German relations.

- papers should avoid simply summarising existing knowledge, but rather take a particular topic, person or building as a starting point from which to draw wider conclusions.

- papers should include a comparison of German and English developments.

- since the Victorian Society is paricularly concerned with buildings, papers which look at the architectural legacy of 19th century educational developments will be particularly welcome.

- papers which are accompanied by slides (Diapositiven) will also be welcome.

- where possible, papers should be delivered in English. (The Society is hoping to arrange for translation of papers, where necessary, and for interpreters at discussion sessions. Papers for translation need to be submitted in advance).

- it is intended that papers delivered at the Conference will be published as a volume of Prinz-Albert-Studien. A timetable for submission of papers will be sent to those whose contributions are accepted.

- a modest fee will be paid to contributors. If sponsorship can be found, the Society will pay reasonable travel, accommodation and living expenses.

- speakers will be able to attend the other events (excursions and the reception), though a charge will have to be made for these.
