The Research Unit Comparative Public Policy at the Institute of Political Science of the University of Tübingen invites applications for one PhD Position / Research Officer for the duration of 3 years from 1 October 2019.

The position is part of the project ‘Freedom of movement and social policy in historical and international comparison’ funded by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The research will explore the relationship between free movement and social assistance across federations (see https://uni-tuebingen.de/de/153036) for further information. The PhD student will be working in a group of 4 researchers.

The advertised post focusses on studying the relationship between migration and locally provided welfare (poor relief) in the North German Confederation (Norddeutscher Bund). The latter shares many structural features with the EU, and political and policy issues relating to free movement and welfare are strikingly similar. The research will involve qualitative historical work.

The PhD student will contribute to the research project and write her/his individual dissertation within the scope of, or on a topic closely associated with, the project topics. There is plenty of freedom to decide what the individual dissertation should look like, both in terms of questions and research design.
Essential requirements:
- Excellent undergraduate and graduate (master level) degree (preferably political science, but graduates from other relevant disciplines, such as history and sociology are also considered).
- Interest and knowledge of migration and welfare state research
- Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills in German and English.
- Excellent intercultural communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Starting date is 1 October 2019. The employment contract (German pay scale E13 TV-L, 66%, 3 years) will be arranged by the administration of the University of Tübingen.
Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualification. The University seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore encourages qualified women academics to apply for these positions.

If you are interested in this position, please send your application with the usual documentation (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, publication list, etc.) in electronic form (one pdf-file only) to: julia.buchner@uni-tuebingen.de. Deadline for applications is 30 June 2019.
