Fully funded stipend for Namibian scholar or artist in our project "Colonial Photographs from the Herero and Nama Genocide at Hamburg's Ethnological Museum."

We are pleased to announce (subject to final approval) a stipend of up to 12 month for a Namibian national to work with our research team in Hamburg/Germany on a substantial collection of colonial photographs from German Southwest Africa, with a special focus on the Herero and Nama genocide and its aftermath.
The collection of about 1,000 photographs is part of a larger collection of colonial-era photographs in Hamburg’s Ethnological Museum. The project is funded by the Gerda-Henkel-Foundation with a monthly stipend according to the qualification and standing of the candidate (up to 1,400 €/month).
We are looking particularly (but not exclusively) for students, scholars or artists (pho-tographers, filmmakers, etc.) from those communities most affected by German colonial-ism to join our team and prepare either a scholarly study or an art project (film, exhibition, etc.) on the topic and/or material of the collection, with the aim of presenting, if feasible, the results both in Namibia and in Germany.
Simultaneously, a German historian will engage in an in-depth study of the photographic collection. It is expected that the holder of the Namibian stipend will engage intensively both with this historian and the research group in general. For this purpose, an extended residence in Hamburg of 8-12 months is required.
