The Chair of East European History at the University of Konstanz offers Visiting Research Fellowships in the framework of its strategic programme ‘Violence in East and West - Towards an Integrated History of 20th Century Europe’ funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The Fellowships last between 1 and 3 months and are to be taken up between October 2024 and February 2025.

Visiting Research Fellowships "Violence in East and West" (University of Konstanz)

The strategic programme ‘Violence in East and West - Towards an Integrated History of 20th Century Europe’ aims to foster an intellectual environment for researching and teaching a comprehensive European history of violence in the 20th century that critically examines both Eastern and Western Europe equally. Seeking a perspective that overcomes Cold War divisions, it takes violence as a common European experience. We focus not only on large-scale violence, but also that which occurred in society every day and how these various levels intersected.

The fellowships are open to scholars at any career level after the PhD. Fellows are expected to be resident in Konstanz for the duration of the fellowship and to carry out a research project related to the programme’s subject. While any topic on the history of violence in the 20th century Europe is welcome, special consideration will be given to projects with a significant comparative and transnational European dimension.

The fellowships last from 1 to 3 months. Candidates should indicate their preferred length of stay and dates in the application.

Fellows will receive a monthly allowance of 3,000 Euro to cover living costs in Konstanz. The programme staff will assist the fellows in finding suitable accommodation.

Fellows will benefit from the interdisciplinary academic community and the research resources at the University of Konstanz. They will contribute to the intellectual life of the Chair of East European History and the Department of History and Sociology by participating in relevant seminars and workshops. They are expected to present their research in the Chair’s and the Department’s colloquia.

Please send your application (as a single PDF file including cover letter, CV, publication list and max. four page project outline) by email to maria.buko@uni-konstanz.de by 15 May 2024.
