From the Independence movements in the nineteenth century, to the formation of nation states in Latin America different marginalized groups, either politically, culturally or socio-economically, came into conflict with nation state projects. Here we establish the linkage of these different groups through their demand for the amplification of their rights and the reactions to these demands coming form the nation states and their methods of inclusion or exclusion. The diversity of the groups and the different interpretations of politics and culture sometimes come into conflict with nation states. Especially in times of political transitions we can observe, that nation states and their actors use different mechanisms to include or exclude marginalized groups.

We are seeking participants for our symposium, which aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue on the various state mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion and their reasons, justifications and aspirations in different political systems, including kingdoms, republics, dictatorships, and democracies.

Participants of this symposium are welcome to present their research in Spanish and English. We invite scholars to send a proposal (max. 500 words) and a short CV (including affiliation and contact information) before the 15th October 2014 to both organizers. The decisions will be made by the 1st of December 2014 (at the latest).

Desde las respectivas Independencias y la formación de Estados nacionales en América Latina en el siglo XIX diferentes grupos marginalizados, ya sea política-, cultural- o socio-económicamente, se enfrentaron con el proyecto del Estado nacional. Estos diferentes grupos se vinculan entre ellos a través de su demanda por una extensión de sus derechos y por las reacciones de los Estados nacionales latinoamericanos, que establecen métodos de inclusión o exclusión, con respeto a esta temática. La diversidad de los grupos y las diferentes visiones sobre la política y la cultura a veces se ponen en conflicto con los Estados. Especialmente en momentos cuando se cambia un sistema político o en fases de transición se ve como los Estados nacionales y sus protagonistas usan diferentes mecanismos para incluir o excluir grupos marginalizados.

El simposio apunta a reunir investigadores de diferentes disciplinas, para iniciar un dialogo interdisciplinario sobre los diferentes mecanismos estatales de exclusión e inclusión y sus razones, legitimaciones y aspiraciones en diferentes sistemas políticos, como reinos, repúblicas, dictaduras, hasta las democracias actuales con sus diferentes orientaciones teóricas.

Los interesados en participar en el simposio pueden presentar sus trabajos en español o inglés. Invitamos a los investigadores a mandar sus propuestas (máx. 500 palabras) y un breve CV (incluyendo institución y contacto) antes del 15 de octubre de 2014 a ambos organizadores. Las decisiones serán anunciadas a más tardar el 1° de diciembre de 2014.
