The Carleton Conferences bring together scholars from a range of disciplines for three days of papers on the history of the family. The program for 1997 comprises some 200 individual papers in 63 panels, as well as three plenary lectures. The plenary speakers are:
Olwen Hufton (European University Institute, Florence, Italy)
Karen Dubinsky (Queen's University, Canada)
Roy Porter (Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, London, U.K.)
The banquet talk will be given by John Gillis (Rutgers University, U.S.A.)
Other participants in the conference, who include many of the leading scholars in their fields, will come from across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Australasia. Panels cover a broad range of themes including gender (highlighted at this conference), sexuality, law, religion, culture, and politics. Geographical coverage includes North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and papers traverse history from the classical period to modern times.
