Bloody Politics: How Princes of the House of France Shaped Political Life (1661-1848)

This international conference questions the political role played by the princes and princesses of the French royal dynasty, so-called "princes of the blood", between the beginning of Louis XIV’s personal reign (1661) and the end of the Capetian monarchy in France (1848). By reintroducing these neglected political actors to the stage of French political life, we want to improve our understanding of the major political changes and ruptures that occurred during the long eighteenth century. Furthermore, our ambition is to compare the institutions and dynamics of the French reigning dynasty with those of other dynasties, both in Europe and in Asia.
The conference will be held in hybrid format.

Cette conférence internationale examine le rôle politique des princes et princesses de la Maison de France, appelés "princes du sang", entre le début du règne personnel de Louis XIV (1661) et la fin définitive de la monarchie capétienne en France (1848). En réintroduisant ces acteurs politiques négligés sur la scène de la vie politique française, nous voulons améliorer notre compréhension des changements et des ruptures politiques majeurs qui se sont produits au cours du long XVIIIe siècle. En outre, notre ambition est de comparer les institutions et les dynamiques de la dynastie régnante française avec celles d'autres dynasties, tant en Europe qu'en Asie.

Bloody Politics: How Princes of the House of France Shaped Political Life (1661-1848)

This international conference questions the political role played by the princes and princesses of the French royal dynasty, so-called "princes of the blood", between the beginning of Louis XIV’s personal reign (1661) and the final end of the Capetian monarchy in France (1848).
We aim to develop a global and European perspective on dynastic politics in France and to challenge established narratives in three historiographical fields: 1) state building and "absolutism"; 2) Enlightenment studies and eighteenth-century political thought; 3) discussions about the origins of the French Revolution. By reintroducing these neglected political actors to the stage of French political life, we want to improve our understanding of the major political changes and ruptures that occurred during the long eighteenth century. Furthermore, our ambition is to compare the institutions and dynamics of the French reigning dynasty with those of other dynasties, both in Europe and in Asia.

Nous voulons considérer les aspects politiques des princes et princesses français dans une perspective globale et européenne et remettre en question trois récits historiographiques : 1) la construction de l'État et l'"absolutisme" ; 2) les études sur les Lumières et la pensée politique du XVIIIe siècle ; 3) les discussions sur les origines de la Révolution française. En réintroduisant ces acteurs politiques négligés sur la scène de la vie politique française, nous voulons améliorer notre compréhension des changements et des ruptures politiques majeurs qui se sont produits au cours du long XVIIIe siècle.
