The massacre perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and the following escalation of the Gaza war with devastating bombardments by the Israeli air force have led to far reaching debates and particularly in Germany, added acrimony to on-going conflicts. The discursive situation is marked by mutual, and largely antagonistic ascriptions. At first sight, these take up the confrontation in the conflict between Israel and Palestine; but at the same time, fundamental issues are at stake concerning not only German stances on Nazi crimes, but also Germany’s role in a global configuration currently undergoing swift and dramatic change. Within the German public, both the limits of what can be said are at issue, and marginalisation of a range of approaches and propositions.
It is hoped that the proposed issue will bring together diverse perspectives from the Global South and also reflect on the current controversy around postcolonialism and antisemitism.
