This MA is a great opportunity to study at a world-class institution in the centre of London. It is also an excellent entry point into more advanced study. Birkbeck is unique in London in that all teaching takes place in the evenings between 6 and 8pm, which enables students to pursue either their academic research or part-time work during the day.
The MA consists of a compulsory core module, 3 optional courses, and a 15,000 word dissertation. These components can be completed in the course of one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). The introductory core course explores historiographical and methodological themes in European history from the early modern period to the present day. In addition, students choose 3 options from a list covering a wide geographical and thematic spread. Assessment is by coursework and the dissertation.
Students with undergraduate degrees in significantly different disciplines are invited to apply for the extended MA programme. The first year provides a foundation in historical study and prepares students for the MA.
The Department of History, Classics and Archaeology is a vibrant department of Birkbeck, which boasts world class research in British, French, German, Italian, Russian and Balkan history. Research at all levels plays a vital part in the activities of the Department.
Birkbeck is at the centre of London's Bloomsbury district, with its multitude of libraries, museums and research institutions. The British Library and the British Museum are each a 10-minute walk away. Other libraries in the vicinity include the University of London library, the library of the Institute of Historical Research, the Warburg Institute, the Wellcome Library and the library of the German Historical Institute. Birkbeck is part of the University of London, and Birkbeck students have access to the institutions and events of the University. They will receive a University of London Masters Degree.
The MA in European History is just one in a range of MA programmes offered by the Department, among them MAs in the History of Ideas, Historical Research, British History, World History, Contemporary History and Politics, and Early Modern History.
